THE "CROSS PROJECT"
Copernico Radio and Optical Skywatching System

Abstract

As a result of repeated and documented sights of anomalous lights by the staff of the Astronomical Observatory N. Copernico in Saludecio (RN), not leaded to null of known, from January 1997 a systematic monitoring in the optical and photographic field has begun. Such luminous phenomenon has been noticed on the vertical line of our observatory and on the coast of Romagna and Marche more times.

The phenomenon of the lights in Adriatic is not historically datable, but many testimonies of the past exist, that induce to us to enclose all the events in one typological classification not too much extended; substantially constituted by apparitions of " lights " of varied shapes, brightness and duration. These events have fed always one sure casuistry, ufological too, without however succeeding to reduce the phenomenon under a unique denominator.

CROSS PROJECT, (Copernico Radio and Optical Skywatching System), is the research program that resolves to catalogue and study the phenomenon. The target is to document and study from a physical point of view the anomalous lights that introduce numerous analogies with great part of the casuistry documented in Norway and in other parts of the world.
The plan elaborated into the Observatory, supported by the technical collaboration of the Astrophysical Teodorani Massimo and Ing. Stelio Montebugnoli of the Dep. of RadioAstronomy of the CNR based in Medicina (BO), was born as a result of several contacts during which it has been put to comparison our luminous phenomenon with that most famous one of the lights of Hessdalen, inquired and studied by them during missions EMBLA 2000/01/02.

The responsibles of the plan, Lollino Gianfranco and Fabiana Fiatti, during the numerous sessions of monitoring carried  from 2000 to 2002, have found two good places for the observation of the lights: the cape of Gabicce (PU) and the bay of Portonovo of Ancona. Places that in both cases point out on the sea with essential characteristics of darkness and altitude for a better observation.

The photographic material and video collected during the sessions of monitoring carried out from 2000 to 2002 constitute the physical evidence of the apparitions of the anomalous lights in Adriatic, and is protected from Copyright.

The Beginning

It was the sight of an unusual luminous globe series by Giorgio Del Bianco and Giometti Giacomo during the evening of 15 January 1997 while they were about to start a session of galaxies spotting to the supernova search. The event had the approval by other witnesses who that same evening phoned to the observatory from near locations. The following evening, we obtained the photographies of a luminous object from which could be understood how much this phenomenon was similar to the type of luminous phenomena that have taken place in recurrent way from 1981 in a western north valley of Norway called HESSDALEN and, after some time, after careful search in many other Internet sites, we understood how this phenomenon was extended to tens of other places in the world...

Here the photostory of that 15 January 1997

15 January 1997 - time 20:30, the phenomenon starts with the apparition in sequence of three globes of lights, the phenomenon has a duration of about 5-6 sec. The three luminous globes are ollowed in sequence in order to vanish under the eyes of the witnesses.

15 January 1997 - time 20:50, after approximately 10 minutes another luminous event, more extensive and spectacular, has involved the two Astrophysical those describe, like reproduced graphically, the apparition in sequence of 5 more luminous globes much more than the previous ones, disappearing immediately after their apparition.
16 January 1997 - time 20:15, the following evening, after collecting in observatory several signallings by other witnesses, we got with two cameras one of the lights that for 4 times in an hour are appeared in various points of our horizon, in an arc of 40 azimutal degrees. The photo has been made in position " B " and the stopper has been closed immediately after the apparition of the light.
Particular zoom of the photogram made by one camera Olympus Om1n ob. 50mm. f1.8 on Ektar100asa film.
The negative has been scanned with high resolution and, even with a reduced scale image, shows  a complex luminous object with many luminous lobes and a red halo. The long exposure does not concur us to estimate the real geometric structure of the light, admitted that it has had it, but only the complex luminous structure.
Another magnified particular one of the second photogram got with a Pentax camera on Ektar film 1000asa with 135mm Tele. In this case a smaller exposure of the same object reveals us a more globular structure than the previous one, obvious sign that the object had a own motion, from the moment that both the cameras were mounted on treppiede and the release was carried out with flexible. This image closer shows with greater evidence the most luminous inside of the light globe.

The Cross Project has the primary target to verify if the sights that take place in our region and the national territory, have the characteristics of repetitive and/or regularities and, in affirmative case, to establish the correlations with the measures carried out from several scientific shipments in Norway, during which they have been put to point and tested new phantom analyzers multichannel that, connected to antennas of new conception, have allowed to pick up anomalous and strange radio signals during the apparition of the mysterious lights.

The instrumentation
that our observatory will go to install will be, in part, the same of that one installed in the famous blue-box, in Hessdalen. All that is condition essential in order to obtain the same useful parameters for a direct comparison.

Trying to obtain the maximum result with the minimal effort, and in consideration of the fact that the research in the frequencies radio regarding that optical, involves of the remarkable differentiations of technological type, even if only the wavelengths change, the beginning instrumentation will have however and necessarily to satisfy all the requirements of the program.

The departure configuration previews a control system video served by a software recognizing every variation in the scene previously recorded like subject and therefore in a position to save only those frame with date and hour. This control is useful from a quantitative point of view and statistical, being able to work also and above all in automatic but it has the disadvantage not to be able to offer no type of scientifically useful data if not for an visual esteem of the phenomenon.

The radio part instead represents the true "scientific surveillance" because it would have to concur to us to record, in sight case, the same marks "spike" obtained by the installed instrumentation in Hessdalen. The system previews one or more antennas or a system of antennas, purposely studied with a receiver of type INSPIRE or ELFO with a range of the minimal frequencies from 50Hz to 110 Khz, a Computer with equipped CPU AMD 800mhz, card Sound Blaster 32bit, software of Grahm elaboration and an audio recorder for the recording of signals.

Therefore like the development of optical techniques that preview the use of spectrometers that can analyze the luminous source qualitatively.
All this in order to begin. The instrumentation will come implemented during the time and corrected depending by several requirements that we will meet.
